DJ Tira (born 24 August 1976) is a South African DJ and record producer best known for contributing to the GQOM music genre.

Mthokozisi Khathi professionally known as DJ Tira was born in Kwahlabisa village, KwaZulu-Natal to Mr. Khathi and Mrs. Abigail Khathi on the 24th of August, 1976 where he spent three years before his parent relocated to Durban in 1979. Tira or Khathi attended Mlokothwa High School, a boarding school at that time. He discovered his love for music and was influential in organizing shows and dances for school fun. Later, he enrolled at the University of Natal, now known as the University of KwaZulu-Natal for a Bachelor’s degree after his high school education.
Career
The South African DJ developed an interest in disk jockey in 1996 while studying at the university. Khathi received his first shot at fame after he won the DJ Knockout competition in 2000 organized by the South African division of the beverage brand Smirnoff. He released his first record, “Real Makoya,” in 2001, which he compiled with fellow disk jockey counterpart DJ Khabzela. Oskido signed Tira to his group “Kalawa Jazzmee” in 2005. He performed with the stage name “Tzozo En Professor” and later formed Durban’s Finest with fellow “Kalawa Jazzmee” member DJ Sox.

Tira has a long history with DJ Oskido, who gave him his first disk jockeying contract. He made a massive wave under the Kalawa group before leaving and worked with fellow DJ Sox to drop a compilation album under the Durban Finest group. The DJ later launched his recording studio “Afrotainment” in 2007 and signed youth sensation DJ Cndo to his record label.
He is known to promote young and talented artists and further moved to sign Kwaito Group’s “Big Nuz” after moving to Durban from Johannesburg. He helped promote some names and has featured in many tracks, such as Big Nuz’s “Ubala Lolo” and DJ Clock’s “Mahamba,” which made huge waves on radio stations and various music chart lists.
